Trekking Mt Rwenzori is an experience to remember! The journey starts off as an easy drive into Kasese town which lies in the inclines of Mt. Rwenzori.

A climb to this snow capped mountain is one of the unique experiences you’ve been looking for in Africa.

Its misty peaks provide a stunning background and consist six main mountains with peaks exceeding 4.500 m and these are: Mt. Stanley, Mt. Speke, Mt. Baker, Mt. Gessi, plus Mt. Emin Pasha. and Mt. Luigi di Savoia.

They are found along the borderline between Uganda and Congo and the highest peak is Margherita towering 5.119 m above Sea Level.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival -Kampala

Arrive Entebbe International Airport for a warm welcome by a company representative to transfer to your overnight hotel in Kampala.  Rest and unwind no activity today.

Overnight stay in Kampala at Serena Hotel ( high end hotel), Cassia Lodge – (moderate facility) Eliana Hotel – (budget facility)

Meal plan: Dinner

Day 2: Kampala – Kasese

An early morning departure from Kampala takes you westward to Kasese town with a stopover at the equator line and another stop for lunch. This journey to Kasese is via Masaka, Mbarara, and Bushenyi with lots of beautiful scenery along the way.

Arrive Kasese and continue to Rwenzori Mountaineering services to finalize arrangements for equipment hire to start the trek the next day.

Dinner and overnight at Equator Snow Lodge ((High end lodge) or Hotel Margherita Kasese (Moderate facility) or Ruboni Community Camp (Budget facility).

Day 3: Nyakalengija – Nyabitaba Hut

After an early breakfast relocate to the park headquarters at Nyakalengija for briefing and the selection of porters to assist with luggage during the hike.

The hike starts at 1,646m with a steep climb which ends at Nyabitaba Hut at 2,651m. Dinner and overnight at Nyabitaba hut.

Day 4: Nyabitaba – John Matte Hut

The start from Nyabitaba at 2651m leads to John Matte Hut at 3505m a trail that leads to a steep descend across River Mubuku before ascending along the sides of Bujuku valley to John Matte Hut at 3505m.

Day 5: John Matte – Bujuku Hut

Today we wake up to another fascinating climb that ends at Bujuku hut at 3962m. This trail is an engaging experience across the famous Bigo Bog and skirts Lake Bujuku to arrive Bujuku Hut at 3962m.

Day 6: Bujuku – Elena Hut

This morning we climb to Elena Hut which rises with a steep ascend through the rocky Groundsel Gully on wards to Scott Eliot Pass (4,372m), which is the highest point of the loop trail to end the day at Elena Hut (4,541m).

Have dinner and spend the night at Elena Hut

Meal plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 7: Elena – Kitandara Hut, 4,023 m.

Starting early on this  special today, with more chilly hiking through snow to ascend to 5109m the highest peak which is Margherita peak. The early start provides better chances to view the peak before the obstructing mist clouds it up.

After enjoying its numerous views descend via Scott Elliot and on to the mountain Hut by the twin Kitandara Lakes at 4023m.

Day 8: Kitandara – Guy Yeomen Hut, 3,261 m.

Wake up for an early start to embark on the steep and long climb from the Lake to Fresh field Pass at (4282m). Today is a challenge because of the long muddy trail that will end up at Guy – Yeoman Hut (3505m).

Day 9: Guy Yeomen – Nyakalengija – Rwenzori Base

Another early start of the day from Guy Yeomen via a very challenging spot along the way to Kachuchu where the trail parallels and crosses Mubuku River twice in deep mud for most of the way to Nyabitaba.

At this point we have the option to spend the night at Nyabitaba Hut or continue to Nyakalengija at the park headquarters and onward for a refreshing warm shower.

Dinner and overnight at Equator Snow Lodge ((High end lodge) or Hotel Margherita in Kasese town (Moderate facility) or Ruboni Community camp (Budget facility).

Day 10: Kasese – Entebbe

Wake up to a relaxed breakfast before returning to Kampala with lunch en route and a stopover at the equator to look around the curio shops for souvenirs. Continue to Entebbe arriving in the evening to be dropped off at your overnight hotel.

Day 11:  Entebbe International Airport

You will be transferred to Entebbe International Airport for your flight home.

The Safari Exclusions

The expenses of personal nature like: Air fare, Visa, soda/alcoholic drinks, laundry, tips to local guides, telephone, and porter fee while trekking, personal insurance, personal shopping bills.

What to bring: Clothing (essential):

  • Summer shirt/s and shorts – for walking in the heat at the start of the trek
  • Warm long-sleeved shirt – for when it gets cold
  • Warm long walking trousers (not jeans!)
  • Fleece jacket (one or more, and/or a down jacket) – for additional warmth; or a warm anorak/jacket which should not be too heavy
  • Thermal underwear
  • Good quality waterproof and windproof outer shell (Jacket & trousers)
  • Cheap plastic poncho
  • Hat – a warm hat and a sun hat (that has both a peak and shades the back of your neck)
  • Wool Hat/Balaclava
  • Gloves – 2 pairs; one pair of thin liners and another of warmer, waterproof outer gloves are more practical than mittens.


  • Mountain boots – essential (good quality well worn in)
  • Walking Shoes (another pair of lighter weight walking shoes / trainers for the start of the climb)
  • Several pairs of warm, cushioned socks (so you always have a dry pair to change into)
  • Gaiters have a limited but useful role in preventing scree, snow and mud (at the start of the climb) from getting into your boots. Rubber boots can work out more.

Equipment (essential)

  • Good quality Sleeping bag (minimum rating of 4 seasons) (Extra sleeping bags available from us upon request at $15 each for the whole trek)
  • Soft Bag / Hold all or Rucksack (framed or unframed) – large enough to hold your personal gear (limit 25Kg) on the mountain; this will be carried by a porter.
  • Day sac – minimum capacity 20kg – that you will carry. Big enough for you to carry your daily water (3litres), lunch box, camera, wet weather clothing and fleece jacket.
  • External protective cover for rucksack & day sac (or pack all contents in plastic bags for water-proofing)
  • Polarized snow glasses or goggles – to protect your eyes from sun glare and snow. At the very least good quality sunglasses (models with side-shields are preferable).
  • High factor sun block (minimum factor + 15)
  • Lip salve
  • Head Torch and a set of spare batteries (special batteries are not always available locally)
  • 2nd / Back up torch and spare batteries
  • Water bottle(s) (strong) to hold 3 liters – which you will carry with you, daily)
  • Water treatment tablets / iodine or quality filter (although water gets boiled for you by our staff and served as tea or coffee)
  • Spare plastic bags (to keep things as dry as possible)
  • Wash kit plus a small towel
  • Basic First Aid kit (for personal use) including paracetamol & dehydration sachets
  • Bring few of your favorite sweets and dried fruit
