Mount Elgon National Park

Overview

Did you know that Uganda hosts an extinct volcanic mountain with the largest surface area in the world measuring about 50 km by 80 km, and a caldera with a width of about 8 km? The Mountain is known as mount Elgon protected under Mount Elgon National Park by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. The mountain’s highest peak is Wagagai which towers up to about 4,321m and lies at the border with Kenya.

The Park is about 1,121km² in size and consists of a lush montane forest, a mixed bamboo belt, heath and spectacular moorland hyrachs, which contain rare species like the giant Lobelia Elgonensis and clusters of groundsels unique to Africa.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Entebbe

Arrival – a warm meet and greet at Entebbe International Airport and transfer to Kampala. Check into your hotel room refresh have dinner and rest. In case your flight arrives early in the day a city tour of Kampala will be arranged.

Dinner and overnight at Serena Hotel (High end hotel) or  Cassia Lodge (Moderate facility)  or Hotel Eliana – ( Budget facility)

Day 2: Entebbe – Budadiri

After an early breakfast embark on the journey to eastern Uganda via the tea and sugar plantations, Mabira tropical rain forest, and via the river Nile’s hydro electricity power dam. We will have lunch along the way in Mbale town and head to Budadiri to prepare for the next days’ hike at Bunamasifu. Dinner and overnight camping at Bunamasifu.

Meal plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Day 3: Sasa River Camp

Early start, be prepared for a steep and rugged climb to Sasa River Camp. Dinner and overnight camping at Sasa River Camp.

Meal plan: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Day 4: Mudde Cave

Continue on the hike after breakfast with our lunch boxes and bottled mineral water on a walk that ends up at Jackson’s Pool. Dinner and overnight camping at Mudde Cave camp.

Meal plan: Breakfast, Lunch Dinner.

Day 5: Mudde Cave

Have breakfast; climb to the Jackson’s’ and Wagagai Summit. Have lunch on the mountain – dinner and overnight camping at Mudde Cave camp.

Day 6: Hunters Cave

Breakfast, after walk across to the “Hot Springs” and on wards to Hunters cave for lunch, today dinner and overnight camping at Hunters Cave Camp.

Meal plan: Breakfast, Lunch Dinner.

Day 7: Descend and return to Kampala

Have breakfast descend to Kapkwata continuing onward to Sipi Falls. Get debriefed and stretch out a little before returning Kampala with our lunch en-route. Arrive Kampala and visit some curio shops for possible souvenirs to take home.

Day 8: Kampala – Entebbe International airport

Today you will be dropped off at Entebbe International airport for your flight home.
